{"id":38,"date":"2012-11-29T00:12:31","date_gmt":"2012-11-29T05:12:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/torensmith.com\/?p=38"},"modified":"2020-12-19T19:37:53","modified_gmt":"2020-12-20T01:37:53","slug":"about-me","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/torensmith.com\/?p=38","title":{"rendered":"About Me"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I am a carbon-based lifeform. \u00a0I grew up in Louisiana and Texas; my father was a philosophy professor, my mother a pediatric oncology researcher. \u00a0My <a href=\"http:\/\/www.arts.ufl.edu\/bio.aspx?PID=127\">sister<\/a> is a flute professor, and my brother owns a small business and does support work for Dell.<\/p>\n<p>When I left home, I attended the <a href=\"http:\/\/tams.unt.edu\/\">Texas Academy of Math and Sciences<\/a> at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.unt.edu\/\">University of North Texas<\/a>, which meant starting college pretty early. \u00a0When I finished that, I moved to Austin, attended UT for a while, started working in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cs.utexas.edu\/\">Computer Science department<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>By now, I&#8217;ve worked there for 20+ years, moving up in responsibility. \u00a0I&#8217;m currently deeply involved in the planning for transitioning the department&#8217;s infrastructure to the new <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cs.utexas.edu\/about-us\/new-building\">Bill &amp; Melinda Gates Computer Science Complex<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>My wife <a href=\"http:\/\/homes.cs.washington.edu\/~cynthia\/\">Cynthia<\/a> is a Ph.D. student in robotics at the University of Washington in Seattle. \u00a0There is a lot of travel involved.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m big into movies; I built a stadium-seating theater in my house that seats 26 with a 150&#8243; screen.<\/p>\n<p>In my spare time I like to fix things. \u00a0Anything, really: electronics, software, cars, plumbing, whatever. \u00a0I also like video games, and I have a cat.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I am a carbon-based lifeform. \u00a0I grew up in Louisiana and Texas; my father was a philosophy professor, my mother a pediatric oncology researcher. \u00a0My sister is a flute professor, and my brother owns a small business and does support work for Dell.
